THE TRAGEDY OF THE MUNICH GAMES HITS STORE SHELVES NATIONWIDE DECEMBER 20
ESPN Home Entertainment and ABC Sports will release The Tragedy of the Munich Games on DVD, Tuesday, Dec. 20 th . The Emmy Award-winning documentary explores the impact this event had on public consciousness, sport, terrorism, television, and the Olympics as an event and as an ideal. Guiding the viewer through the tragic events of Munich will be Peter Jennings and Jim McKay, as well as former president of ABC Sports Roone Arledge and Geoff Mason, the coordinating producer in Munich , all of whom covered the tragic events.
The Tragedy of the Munich Games will be available wherever DVDs are sold for the suggested retail price of $14.99, and is being released by ESPN Home Entertainment three days prior to the theatrical debut of Munich , Steven Spielberg's highly anticipated film.
On Sept. 5, 1972, eight "Black September" Palestinian terrorists entered the living quarters of the Israeli team at the Olympic Village in Munich . During the siege, the terrorists killed two team members and took the other nine as hostages. The tense 22-hour standoff included a botched rescue attempt in which all the hostages were shot. The Tragedy of the Munich Games provides interviews with family members of those who were killed, as well as Olympic athletes who were in Munich and were eyewitnesses to the events.
The powerful documentary originally aired on ABC Sports in 2002 under the title Our Greatest Hopes. Our Worst Fears. The Tragedy of the Munich Games .
The Tragedy of the Munich Games , produced by ESPN Home Entertainment and distributed by Hart Sharp Video, will be telecast on ESPN2 on Dec. 20 and ESPN Classic on Dec. 22 at 8 p.m.
