SYNOPSIS : Rumor has it that they still exist - the independent rock bands that don't live for the fame, the money, or the fancy entourage. And if they do exist, can they survive in an industry driven by corporate culture and greed with selling out? The documentary follows the final days of just such a rock band. Brad Corrigan, Pete Francis, and Chad Urmston made their college band Dispatch into a dream come true - three regular guys whose music touched hundreds of thousands of fans without the help of a record label or PR machine. They sold out major venues, toured non-stop, and hit the Billboard charts with three different albums. Tight harmonies and diverse talents made Dispatch unique, but eventually become their undoing, having three equal "leaders" with warring values put the band - and their friendships - at stake. After eight years together, they decided to go out with a bang - one huge, free show staged in Boston in July of 2004.
The weeks leading up to the show were filled with emotion, as the band came back together after two years off tour, remembering what made their dream so amazing, and what made it unbearable at times. Ultimately, a grassroots marketing campaign and the passion and dedication of thousands of fans made The Last Dispatch an historical moment for Independent Music. 110,000 made the pilgrimage to the Hatch Shell from 20 countries and every U.S. State, making it the largest event in Independent Music history. It may have been a blip on the radar for the record industry, but it was the pinnacle of music moments for Dispatch fans. For the band, it was proof that their music really meant something, and that the end is often the beginning of something beautiful and new.
ABOUT DISPATCH: Forget trying to slap a label on Dispatch . You're welcome to give it a shot - plenty of people have, calling them at times a heartfelt acoustic trio, a wailing rock band, a devil-may-care funk act. But the band rejects epithets at every turn. It's nothing personal, it's just that they find inventiveness more interesting than churning out the kind of neat little ditties that people listen to for a week and then forget. Dispatch began as three Middlebury College friends - Brad Corrigan, Pete Francis, and Chad Urmston - touring in a broken down van named Wimpy, playing the music they liked. For years they managed themselves, ran their own sound, and produced and marketed their own music, despite offers from major record labels. And something incredible happened. Fans were drawn to Dispatch because of their authenticity and their refusal to give in to a "system" that would have ultimately tried to make them over into something different.
Soon they were outselling platinum recording artists in hard ticket sales, with no radio airplay, no marketing budget, and no corporate machine behind them. The key to their success? Genuine relationships. Because fans had to find Dispatch by word of mouth, each one owned the discovery and passed it on. Propelled by this underground movement, the band went on to sell over 400,000 records and hit the Billboard charts Top 20 with three different albums And, of course, at The Last Dispatch concert in July 2004 over 110,000 fans turned out to show their love and respect in one huge, final farewell.
